Pilgrims and Travellers June 21, 2014

The pilgrimage was an important part of medieval Christianity, a physical journey towards a spiritual goal. We will explore this through the music of the Cantigas de Santa Maria, Galician devotional songs in praise of Mary and narratives of the miracles of Mary; the Llibre Vermell de Montserrat, compiled and located in the monastery of Montserrat which was a major site of pilgrimage during the time of its compilation; and the music of the Codex Calixtinus, a guide for medieval pilgrims containing music that would have been performed at the shrine dedicated to the Apostle Saint James the Great at the end of one of the most famous pilgrimage routes, El Camino de Santiago de Compostela.
